The Janus II, flagship of the COMEX oceanographic research fleet, has just undergone a full renovation of its vital parts.
This refitting work was carried out at the Saint-Mandrier shipyard to IMS 700..
In addition to the renewal of the hull paint, the crew carried out mechanical maintenance operations on the motors (2 x 700 kW) including a review of the turbochargers, revision of the Schottel azimuth propellers, raising of the launching gantry, reconditioning of the crane , …
The dry-docking of Janus II also allowed the COMEX teams to change the wired connection of the Super Achille ROV (-1000 m) by a new fiber optic.
Once completed the work on Janus II, it returned to the sea, to the other side of the Mediterranean for new missions.
It will be followed during March by the refitting of the Minibex, another oceanographic vessel of the fleet.
COMEX oceanographic vessels
With the vessels Janus II, Minibex, and Survex, COMEX has a private oceanographic fleet, multipurpose, and well equipped to operate from the surface to 2,500 meters of depth. They are furnished with equipment at the leading edge of technology and in constant evolution to respond to the requirements of clients on very diverse contracts. They also embark experienced “in-house” personal, knowledgeable in the implementation of this sophisticated equipment and especially reactive in a field where the unexpected is not rare. New tools are added regularly as required, and the operators are trained as well on new techniques, reinforcing their operational experience.
In addition to their traditional role as a platform for industrial field testing in the ocean, as a supplier of underwater images for the audiovisual industry, their collaboration with the National Navy and agencies dependent on the DGA, their missions for the search of wrecks following a shipwreck or an air crash, or in the framework of a cultural (archeology) or historical mission, assistance for placing elements of Antares, at 2 500 meters depth, the only underwater neutrino telescope in the world, the COMEX oceanographic vessels take their share in a sector which is of growing and pressing interest to the public and the State authorities: the conservation of the marine environment.

MINIBEX
Oceanographic research vessel that is transportable by cargo-ship for transoceanic crossings, the Minibex helps to ensure exploration missions and any type of underwater work on the continental shelf. In particular, it presents an exceptional ratio between mobility, reduced crew, and tools available on board.
JANUS II
This 30 meters long catamaran is an oceanographic vessel with dynamic positioning, built entirely of aluminum. It offers a wide work platform adapted to a multitude of missions on and under the sea. Its great autonomy, 20 days without refueling, and its low operational costs allow for complex offshore operations within reasonable budgets.
